students in a city centre

Moving to a new city to study at university is one of the most exciting opportunities, but what should you do when you first arrive? We have the answers for you!

The best way to get settled in your new city is to explore what it has to offer. Let’s not forget you also have an exciting new campus to call home – there’s lots to do there too. So where should you begin? Keep reading to find out.

Explore your new city

Your new city is part of your student experience, so take time to explore it, get comfortable and make it feel like home.

Discover local neighbourhoods and attractions

Take time to explore the areas around you and get to know your new surroundings. Visit museums, art galleries, parks, local markets and historical sites to understand the city’s culture and history. You can also use weekends to explore iconic landmarks and popular cultural areas. If you are feeling homesickness, getting out and about can help you feel more connected to your new city.

Find your favourite places to eat and hang out

Exploring the local food scene is one of the best ways to settle into a new place. Try local cafés, restaurants, street-food markets and student-friendly spots near campus. Look for new flavours but also find comfort food that reminds you of home. An easy way to do this would be to google “Chinese food near me” and open your maps app to find the top-rated spots in your area. These places often become your go-to spaces to relax, meet friends and feel more settled in your new routine.

Make the most of your student discount

One of the best parts of being a student (other than getting your dream degree of course) is student discounts. No matter where you are studying, there are plenty of shops, restaurants and attractions that offer student discounts. There are also apps like UNiDAYS and Student Beans that make it easy to find deals on food, fashion, tech and fun activities.

Don’t forget you can also take advantage of railcards and student discounts on public transport to make exploring your new city fun and affordable.

Socialise and build a community

A great part of studying abroad, especially if you choose one of our International Study Centres, is being surrounded by other international students who are also in a new country for the first time. A great way to get to know your new friends and classmates is to spend one night a week (or however long you wish) trying a dish from each other’s home country. You can also set up study groups, explore the cities nightlife by going to gigs and seeing what restaurants your city has to offer.

One of my favourite things about living here especially is I met people from different backgrounds, from different countries. I got a little culturally diverse, I would say. And every Friday my friend group has a gathering where they all cook a dish from their country. So I find that very interesting.

Study in new environments

A fun way to settle into your social and study life is to discover new places to study that aren’t just your new bedroom. By doing so you will not only find places to be productive, but it’s also a great way to explore your new city.

Coffee shops, public libraries and parks can provide inspiring settings to boost your motivation and get creativity flowing.

Make the most of campus life

Campus life is where you’ll meet new people, build routines and start feeling part of a student community.

Join clubs and societies

Joining clubs and societies is a brilliant way to get stuck into university life. Depending on which university you choose to attend there are hundreds of clubs and societies you can join, including:

  • Filmmaking
  • Dance society
  • Table tennis
  • Video gaming
  • Cooking
  • Reading club
  • Basketball and more.

These are a great way to meet like-minded people, building confidence and you may even find a new interest.

Attend campus events

The best way to make the most of campus life is to attend events. To start your university journey, you can take part in welcome week and induction events – these are a great way to meet new people and get comfortable with campus life. Throughout the year, depending on which university you choose to study with, there are also cultural festivals, film nights, craft workshops and social events.

Make the most of university facilities

Taking advantage of the excellent facilities at your university is definitely one of the best ways to settle into your new home. Not only will you find great places to study like the library, but you can also use sports facilities and common areas to spend time with your new friends.

You can also check out the support services straight away, so you know where to go if you need help at any point during your studies. The incredible support teams at your university can give you guidance on anything from academic skills and wellbeing.
