What is the International Year One?

Are you considering applying to a UK university but want to improve your English first? If you’d like to level up your English and IELTS score and prepare for life at university abroad - without adding an extra year to your studies - then an International Year One course could be the perfect pathway for you.

The Study Group International Year One programme is a two-semester or three-term course equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree. Throughout the programme, you will be introduced to the key concepts of your degree while improving your English language and academic skills. Once you’ve completed the International Year One course, with the required grades, you can join the second year of your chosen undergraduate degree.

There are several different courses available, including accounting and finance, psychology, engineering and more. Study Group has programmes available at locations across the UK, from Cardiff University in Wales to Leeds Beckett University in North Yorkshire. The right International Year One course will boost your confidence and ensure you have the English skills needed to successfully complete your degree in the UK.

Why choose the International Year One?

Personalised teaching and support

Studying abroad can seem daunting, but when you start your course, you will have access to support from teachers and university staff who will help you with anything you need.

During your studies, you’ll benefit from being in a small class, meaning you’ll receive more individual attention from your tutor than if you were in a larger group.

All International Study Centre staff members are dedicated to providing comprehensive support inside and outside the classroom and will be available to help you adjust to your studies and new environment.

Improve your skills and knowledge

In addition to improving your English, the International Year One programme will introduce you to the core topics of your degree course. For example, if you choose to do an International Year One programme in Engineering, you might have access to CAD software and lab facilities, and the opportunity to gain industry experience. Also, with your newly improved English skills, you’ll soon feel comfortable making friends and joining one of the many university clubs on campus.

Experience university-level teaching

Students enrolled in the International Year One programme benefit from university-level teaching and access to additional learning support. Your university tutors will prepare you academically to fill any gaps in your understanding or knowledge. The programme will also help you acclimatise to the teaching style, academic setting and evaluation methods of a UK degree, making the transition to the second year of your degree smoother and more manageable.

A smooth transition to university

The International Year One is designed to equip you with a solid foundation in your chosen subject area and the confidence and competence needed to thrive in a UK university setting. You’ll be studying with students at the same level as you, from a range of cultural backgrounds. This means you’ll have the chance to immerse yourself in university life and get used to living in the UK before starting your degree.
